Quiet killer

Between over a hundret types of the HPV virus only a few are really dangerous. These are the viruses of so called high oncogenic risk (e.g. types 16 and 18), which in the initial phase of infection do not cause any alarming sympthoms, but later they may lead to cervical cancer development and also some vulvar, vaginal as well as head and neck cancers. Unfortunately, in stage of precancerous conditions, or even in stage of early cancer, woman may not sense any pain or other unpleasant sympthoms. That is why regular cytologic examinations are the only method to detect precancerous lesions on uteral cervix and the cancer in an early stage.

Embarrassing problem

The HPV virus type 6 and 11 infection is dangerous not only for women but also for men. Those two viruses are responsible for appearance of genital warts, so called pointed condylomas, on external sexual organs or in the anal area, few weeks or months after sexual contact with infected person. Genital warts are the most common reason of patients presentation to out-patients clinic of sexual diseases in Poland. The treatment is sometimes painful and takes a long time. Because of many cases of reccurences it has to be repeated. The HPV virus infections often subsides spontaneously. However, if there are no symptom of infection, virus in the latent form, may be transmitted through sexual contacts.

Vaccination – an effective protection against cervical cancer and other dangerous diseases caused by HPV

It enabled establishing a vaccine thanks to which in the future the cancer will not be a nightmare of all women.
